You’ve posted on and off for months. You check the likes, you check the follower count, and it barely moves. Meanwhile someone in your field who you know isn’t as good as you, someone with less expertise, less experience, fewer years doing the actual work, just crossed 10k followers. And you’re sitting there wondering if any of this posting is doing anything at all, or if it’s just noise into a feed nobody reads.
I want to tell you what I actually watch for, because it’s not what you’re watching for.
The Dashboard You’re Watching Is the Wrong One
If you’re watching likes and follower counts, you’re watching the wrong dashboard.
The thing that actually predicts new clients isn’t social media vanity metrics. It’s who starts reaching out on their own. Strangers. People you’ve never met, who found your work somewhere and decided, based on what they read, that you’re the person to talk to.
That’s the signal. Not the numbers under the post. The message in your inbox from someone outside your existing network.
The ADHD Coach and the Author Who Referred a Client
I had a client who coaches parents of kids with ADHD. She started publishing long-form articles on her website, then used those articles as the raw material for LinkedIn posts, for her newsletter, for Instagram stories. Just consistently, week after week.
A few weeks in, she reached out to me. Super surprised. She said: “Hey, you know what, this super famous author who wrote a book on the topic just referred a client to me.” And then she said “I feel like now I’m part of the experts.” Publishing consistently gave her a legitimacy that she didn’t know she had, or didn’t feel like she had, in that world with her peers.
My reaction? “I told you so!”
Because it is actually something that we talked about before she started publishing. I asked her: “Are you ready? Because if you start publishing consistently, if you start reaching out and publishing on bigger publications, people WILL start to notice you and you WILL become known as the person who speaks about this topic, who is an expert on this topic. So are you ready for that? Because don’t be surprised if at some point you have television reaching out or radio reaching out because they want you to be on a panel. That’s how this works.”
Here’s the part that matters most: she still only had very few followers. The referral happened anyway. The recognition happened anyway. Because none of that was ever about audience size.
Your Published Work Vouches for You Before Anyone Meets You
After that referral, she reached out to well-known publications about guest articles. They looked at her site, they looked at her social presence, they looked at what she’d already published, and they immediately accepted her proposal. Because they’d seen the quality of her work already sitting there. This opened up, and allowed her to reach, a completely new and bigger audience than she could ever have reached on her own.
You don’t need a big following before bigger publications or well-known people take you seriously. You need a visible track record of showing up. That track record does the vouching for you, even to strangers who’ve never met you.
The Cycle Behind the Consistency
None of this was luck. The exact process was: she’d log in, do the interview, get the article, publish that article, then promote it on her social media profiles and send it to her mailing list using the other pieces of content HeySuna created for her. That’s it. Interview, article, publish, promote. Having that content flywheel is what allowed her to show up consistently, and it all started from something as simple as a conversation.
She didn’t sit in front of a blank page wondering what to write. She talked. The topics she talked about, the first articles she published, were about things people were already reaching out and asking her questions about. That told her those questions were already on her audience’s mind. That’s exactly the kind of topic HeySuna suggests, because it researches your audience and looks at what they’re already asking, then suggests those topics back to you.
You Don’t Need to Be a Writer for This
I know what’s underneath the hesitation. “I don’t know what to write about.” “I feel like I’ve said everything already.” “Why would people read me, why would people listen to me.” I hear all of it, and none of it is the actual barrier.
You do not need to be a writer. You do not need to be the one sitting in front of a blank page for hours. You do not need to spend hours creating the content. You can take an interview, use your expertise, and let AI help with the transcription of that expertise into something publishable. It’s actually easier than people imagine.
But before you start, ask yourself the same question I asked her: are you ready for what happens when people start noticing? Because they will.
